Following celebrations of its 10 year anniversary last year, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival will again gather avid writers, readers, and writing enthusiasts from all over the globe for the 11th Ubud Writers & Readers Festival which will take place from 1st to 5th October 2014 at the enchanting little town of Ubud in tropical Bali's undulating hills.

This year, Ubud Writers and Readers Festival pays homage to Saraswati, the Hindu patron goddess of learning, with the theme ‘Wisdom & Knowledge’.

In Balinese visual art, Saraswati is depicted as a beautiful, four-armed lady standing on a giant lotus, accompanied by a white swam (wisdom) and a peacock (beauty). Her hands carry four objects that symbolize the specific qualities of science, education and the arts: Lontar (palm leaves) manuscript (enlightening and liberating), lute (captivating/mesmerizing), lotus (purifying and transforming), and prayer beads (infinite and spiritual truth).

Leading writers, thinkers, artists and performers from across Indonesia and all corners of the globe will get together over five full days of events to celebrate knowledge and the arts, education, wisdom and science.

Projected to be attended by no less than 100 international writers from 20 countries, the event will feature innovative programs of arts and music, panel discussions, workshops, literary lunches and dinners, book launches and much more.

Building up to the event, the preceding Bali Emerging Writers Festival (BEWF) which was held on 3rd-4th May 2014 has selected 15 emerging Indonesian writers who will be invited and sponsored to appear in the Festival. The 15 writers are: Raisa (Yogyakarta), Absurditas Malka (Bandung), Bambang Kariyawan Ys (Pekanbaru), Bunyamin Fasya (Bandung), Dias Novita Wuri (Tangerang), Erni Aladjai (Makassar), Fadel Ilahi El-Dimisky (Probolinggo), Faisal Oddang (Makassar), Ishack Sonlay (Kupang), Maggie Tiojakin (Jakarta), Ninda Daianti (Jakarta), Regi Sastra Sena (Sukabumi), Rio Fitra SY (Padang), S Metron Masdison (Padang) and Sulfiza Ariska (Yogyakarta). These 15 writers were selected from a staggering 529 applicants who submitted their work to the committee, from 125 cities in 27 provinces.

Held annually in Ubud, Bali’s artistic and cultural heartland, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival has become Southeast Asia’s largest and most renowned cultural and literary event. The Festival is presented by the non-profit foundation, Yayasan Mudra Swari Saraswati, and was first initiated by Janet DeNeefe, co-founder of the Foundation, as a healing project in response to the first Bali bombing. Nowadays, the festival has a noble mission to create a world class festival that celebrates extraordinary stories and amplifies brave voices; tackles global issues and big ideas.
